The Sixes Movement Is Growing – The Benefits For Our Players This Spring

Hi Everyone,
Since we last spoke with you all regarding our Spring Season and the shift to a Sixes format at the K-8 level, the discussion has vastly expanded to include both of LA’s boys leagues. This bodes well for the game in general, and provides specific benefits for our players.
There is now broad buy-in for running a Sixes format in addition to the traditional 10v10. This means that starting in Week 2, 4/5 and 6/7/8 will be able to play Sixes at Belmar in Santa Monica. 2/3 will be playing Sixes at St John Bosco in the SCILL, as per the original plan. K/1 already plays 5v5 so we are trying to secure as many games as possible in Santa Monica to make things more convenient for our families. Please scroll down for team-by-team specifics.
The goal this Spring as always, is to provide our families with:
- The best possible player development and overall experience
- The most convenient game day experience possible
- More opportunities for advanced players
If you are new to the Sixes discussion, here is a quick review:
The Olympics will be in LA in 2028, and they will include lacrosse as an exhibition sport. The format being used in the Olympics is, you guessed it, Sixes. This means that lacrosse is now going mainstream via the Sixes format, and that is already having an effect on the sport:
- Lacrosse personalities like Paul Carcaterra are saying that Sixes should be played by everyone at the youth level: https://www.instagram.com/p/CpSkRqqOZDe/
- The PLL, the top level of the sport, just held its first-ever Sixes Championship: https://youtu.be/JRupf0tg85M
- We already have a World Sixes Championship for men and women: https://youtu.be/3hf3lVMCnHM
Amongst all this build up, a cool little factiod has emerged – Coach Riley Lasda and Coach Eli Lasda, both of whom presently play on the Latvian National team, could both be playing the Olympics. How about that!?
Sixes offers some fundamental benefits to youth players that help them develop faster and into better players (Click HERE to watch a 4 minute explanation of Sixes):
- Everyone will play every position
- There will be more playing time and more touches
- The format will be fast like basketball and emphasizes transition as well as set play
As mentioned above, Sixes has been adopted in some form by both SCILL and LAYLL, our two LA boys lacrosse leagues. This allows us to find the balance of player development, competition and convenience best suited to each of our teams. We are working with both leagues to get the most for our families. Here is a breakdown by team.
K/1
- Will play in LAYLL
- Has always played 5v5, which is essentially Sixes without a goalie
- Week 1 game will be a Sunday game in El Segundo
- Week 2 and beyond we are trying to get as many games as possible in Santa Monica.
2/3
- Will play in SCILL at Bosco on Saturdays
- Sixes format
- 9am training session with 2/3 players for other programs
- 10am game
- SCILL offers our 2/3 the best option for both player development, as well as the best outlet for our advanced players
- Working on building a tournament team for the summer with the other organizations participating in SCILL
- Best platform for our 2/3 players to become part of a leading group of players in this age group
4/5
- Will play in LAYLL
- Sixes format
- Week 1 game will be a Sunday game in El Segundo
- Week 2 and beyond we will have games on Saturday AM at Belmar in Santa Monica
- Working on consistent game times
- Great platform for developing skills while keeping things convenient
6/7/8
- Will play in LAYLL
- Sixes format
- Week 1 game will be a Sunday game in El Segundo
- Week 2 and beyond we will have games on Saturday AM at Belmar in Santa Monica
- Working on consistent game times
- Great platform for developing skills while keeping things convenient
