<– Register For The Evaluations

As we approach the end of the summer season and as we are looking towards our tournament programs this fall and winter, we have developed a new process for placing players on teams and providing them with feedback that helps them get better.

Over the course of the summer our coaching staff has been compiling notes on most of our players after each tournament. These notes allow us to better understand how to design our training, and they also allow us to determine what each player needs individually. It made sense to us to build on this process and to put it to work for our players and for our organization. So rather than hold tryouts to determine who plays on our Fire Select teams, we will be holding evaluations to better understand where our players fit. At present we are scheduling 2 evaluation events spaced one month apart. This should make it possible for all players that are interested to attend. It also allows a player to attend the first evaluation event, receive feedback and work to get better by the second event.

  • First Event: Saturday, July 27 at John Adams Middle School from 10am to 12:30pm
  • Second Event: Saturday, August 24 at Lincoln Middle School from 10am to 12:30pm (PLEASE NOTE THE VENUE CHANGE)
  • Who Should Attend: Any intermediate or advanced player with at least 18-24 months of playing experience that aspires to play on a Fire Select team this season, or that wishes to receive feedback on what it will take to play on a Fire Select team in the future. Fire Select graduation years will include: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
  • Cost: The Evaluation fee is $40 and includes the event fee as well as the feedback sheet

What Is An Evaluation?

An evaluation is similar to a tryout with several key differences.

  1. A tryout is designed to determine whether or not a player is suitable to be on a team that already has a specified schedule and ability level. A tryout provides little to no feedback other than a simple “yes you made it” or “no you didn’t make it.”
  2. An evaluation is part of a feedback loop that determines a players competency in four key areas at a specific point in time: stick skills, athleticism, IQ, effort and attitude. It provides verbal and written feedback and is used as a building block for a player to make improvements.
  3. An evaluation is staffed with more coaches to facilitate better feedback.
  4. A player receives an evaluation document shortly after the conclusion of the evaluation event.

What Is The Process?

  1. Each player registers online, just like for a tryout. However, as part of the evaluation registration, you will be asked to fill out a simple online questionnaire about themselves and their lacrosse objectives. This information is added to each player’s evaluation sheet and helps us plan a player’s path.
  2. At an evaluation event, coaches make notes on a player in four key areas:
  • Stick skills
  • Athleticism
  • Lacrosse IQ
  • Attitude and Effort
  1. Players receive their evaluation results 7-10 days after the evaluation event.
  2. Coaches use the evaluation results to create teams and to develop team schedules.

Benefits Of An Evaluation

  1. The registration questionnaire allows us to learn more about each players specific goals so we can best support them.
  2. We have more information to help us place players on teams and to determine what schedule a team should be playing.
  3. Players receive more comprehensive feedback on their respective ability levels and receive targeted feedback on improvements they can make.

Goals Of The 2019 Fall/Winter Evaluation Process

The process will revolve around several objectives:

  1. Determining how many single grade teams we can make
  2. Determining the skill level at which a specific single grade team will play
  3. Determining rosters for each respective team
