FIRE HLT CLINICS

HLT IS Back! - With a Twist

Five years ago we developed Fire High Level Training (HLT) to help our players have access to specialized training. We put everything on pause during COVID and when fields opened back up, 100% of our programming was training, so we temporarily suspended HLT activities. Once team activities were allowed, our focus shifted to getting teams running smoothly again. Now that things have settled into a more predictable rhythm, we are bringing back HLT with a twist and we think you will like it.

As the name says, HLT is…high level training. Sessions consist of activities that focus on teaching a specific element of the game, or to provide a specific experience. The vibe is fast-paced and high-energy. Sessions are geared towards players who are dedicated to the sport and want to get better.

This Winter & Spring, FIRE HLT returns as a new clinic series, with sessions run by our coaches, as well as sessions run by trusted partners in the sport. These clinics are designed to supplement team practices and will provide a wide variety of experiences and specialty training. Our goal is simple: get your daughter better and expose her to experiences she otherwise might not have.

FIRE HLT clinics are open to any player from any organization, as long as you are willing to work hard, you are interested in learning and love a high-energy and fast-paced environment.

FIRE HLT - NEXT LEVEL DEFENSE with Carley Horan

What:  Coach Carley is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) that has been coaching defensive units for 10 years at the high school, elite club and Division 1 level at USC. She is extremely passionate about helping female athletes get stronger, and coaching defensive units to work together. In each 90 minute clinic, Coach Carley will develop each player through a bottom up progression that trains fundamental skills and game time situations.

Next Level Defense with Carley Horan will provide tools on how to:

  • Get Stronger - Dynamic Warm up/Strength Series
  • Improve Footwork - Speed/Agility Series
  • Read your Opponent
  • Communicate Effectively
  • Work as a Unit
  • Find your Identity

Who: Players in 8th grade and up who play LOCK DOWN defense.

Why: Defense is an inherently selfless position that requires strong, athletic players who trust and support each other. Defensive stops require each player to understand every role, how roles change as the ball moves, and how to recover when major shifts happen. If you don't know your role, you can't do your job, and attackers will exploit the holes in your unit. Coach Carley wants to help you get stronger and teach you each role, so you can get the job done!

When: Sunday 2/27 - 2pm to 3:30pm

Where: American Martyrs School

How & How Much: Click HERE to register - Session is $50

Clinic Size: Maximum of 16 players. (*Need Midfielders for small sided games. Please e-mail randy@firelacrosse.org for more info)

FIRE HLT - DRAW CLINIC with Maggie Preas

What: Maggie played Division I lacrosse for the University of Virginia, where she was also team captain. She has a teaching degree and coached on the East Coast prior to moving to California. Maggie is passionate about teaching and lacrosse and has already had a big impact on the field with our young athletes.

Dominating the draw leads to winning the game. The first 30 minutes of this clinic will focus on ways to improve draw skills through different stick work drills. The next hour will target various draw techniques and when to use them throughout the flow of the game. Some of the skills covered in this clinic include:

  • Stick strengthening (that can then be continued at home)
  • Wrist quickness
  • Self draws
  • Directing the draw to teammates
  • Boxing out as the drawer

Who: Players in 8th grade and above

Why: Winning the draw leads to more offensive possessions which almost always translates to more goals. Players that are able to consistently win draws and adapt to other team’s draw personnel, heavily impact the game and are integral parts of their team’s success.

The end result is that you become much better and safer (less injury prone) at YOUR dodge.
  • Who: This clinic is intended for advanced players in grades 8 and up that want to take their dodging to the next level.
  • Why: Let’s say you are down by 1 with time running out and you need a goal. The ball is in your stick. Wouldn’t you love the confidence to be able to shake your defender, create some space to either take a shot or make a pass to an open teammate for the score?

FIRE HLT - GAME CONTROL with Kennedy Lynch

  • What: This is a 2-part clinic that focuses on the gritty and high pressure nature of playing the circle and taking 8 meters. In the first hour we will focus on high pressure drills used in the college setting to improve circle play. Part two of this clinic will be an 8 meter shooting clinic. Kennedy Lynch is currently a senior at Virginia Tech and also played at Maryland in 2019 when they won the national title. Her specialty is playing on the circle and she is an expert at teaching 8 meters.
  • Who: If you are in 8th or above and would like to improve your 8 meter shooting percentage, or if you just want to get scrappier at the circle, this is for you! Keep in mind that almost all of what you learn on the circle can help your field game with an improvement in GBs and hustle plays.
  • Why: The draw and 8 meters both require having a strategy to succeed. This clinic will teach those strategies, which is something we are not able to do at team practices. Improving your success rate at gaining possession and finishing 8 meters can have a dramatic positive effect on your skill set and the outcome of games.
  • Where: American Martyrs School
  • When: December 19th, 2pm-4pm
  • How & How Much: Click HERE to register - Clinic cost is $50
  • Class Size: This session is limited to 15 players

FIRE HLT - SCORE MORE with Trenna Hill - Mastering the 8m Scenario

This clinic will provide tools on how to feel confident from the 8-meter and break down the components of the success equation including:

  • Shooting mechanics, including power shooting and placement
  • Footwork and getting a fast first step off the line
  • Protecting your stick and handling pressure while weaving through defenders
  • Quickness in shot selection
  • Specific strategies for how to be successful from each hash
  • How to stop “shooting” and start FINISHING

What: Similar to foul shots in basketball, 8-meters are essential, gritty goals that could cost or win the game. Many players experience a lot of anxiety when they get put on the line. You’re tired, you’ve just been fouled on your way to trying to score, maybe you’re a little frantic, and now you have to strategically beat this double team and get past a goalie who is now prepared to be shot on. The odds are stacked against you from the 8-meter.

Who: Players in 8th grade and up who want to start scoring more.

Why: Almost everyone ends up on the 8m line at some point. This clinic gives a player the skills and confidence to convert your goal when it matters.

When: Saturday, March 26 from 10AM to Noon

Where: Belmar Park (https://www.santamonica.gov/historicbelmarpark)

How Much: Session is $65

Class Size: Maximum of 14 players
