JOIN US FOR FALL TRAINING

We have some good news regarding field space for the Fall: we got some! As a result we will be able to offer a full slate of Fall programming from now through Thanksgiving. 

The registration for this week is still weekly. Next week we will offer a seasonal registration package along with the option to sign up on a weekly basis.

We are still operating with capacity constraints, so if you receive a message that a registration is full, please contact randy@santamonicadragons.org and we will see if we can accommodate you.

BOYS 9TH - 12TH

Friday 7pm to 8:30pm - John Adams Middle School - STARTS THIS WEEK 9/18

This session replaces the Tu/Th sessions we have been hosting at John Adams.

BOYS 6TH - 8TH

Monday 7pm to 8:30pm - Marine Park - STARTS NEXT WEEK: 9/21

This session replaces the Tu/Th sessions we have been hosting at John Adams. We may be able to add a second session on Fridays from 7-8:30pm at JAMS, but that is TBD.

BOYS 2ND - 5TH

Wednesday 5pm to 6:30pm - Marine Park (moving to Clover Main in October but same day/time) - STARTS THIS WEEK: 9/16

COVID PROTOCOLS

  • Masks need to be worn at all times
  • 6 foot distancing at all times with mask
  • Make sure to stay distanced AT ALL TIMES, especially entering and exiting the field
  • SIBLINGS AND CAR POOLS MUST ALSO STAY APART. We know you are siblings but people on the outside may think you are being unsafe.
  • There will be a monitor watching our activity
  • All players must check in and perform a temperature check
  • All players must go directly to a designated cone to drop their gear and get suited up
  • Make sure to bring your own water
  • Stay home if you are experiencing COVID symptoms or feel unwell.

VIRTUAL TRAINING

WELCOME TO DRAGONS VIRTUAL TRAINING!

COVID 19 has been a massive disruption to all of our lives and impacted us all. 5 weeks ago, we had to make a choice: sit on our hands and see how things develop, or embrace the challenge and provide our players with the best possible solution. We worked 12-hour days for a week and built a completely new program that is now well under way. We host 15-16 calls and engage around 200 participants every week.

More importantly, Dragons Virtual Training has a specific purpose. We are teaching players how to be better athletes on their own, when nobody is watching. This is something we have always stressed to our players. But when we are on the field and in the frenzy of day-to-day normal life, there simply isn’t time or desire to do more. Now, all we have is “working on our own.” We are in a semi-permanent state of working while nobody is watching.

Dragons Virtual Training EMPOWERS our players to make productive use of their time to become better athletes, lacrosse players, and also to engage their mind.

 

WE JUST ADDED A VIRTUAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL BOYS. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE INFO.

Dragons Virtual Training is designed as an online "sports school" to give players a well-rounded curriculum that is paired with a 5-day a week calendar to interact with teammates and coaches. Pillars of Dragons Virtual Training are:

Here is the typical SCHEDULE for the week:

  • Monday - Individual Training assignments are sent out
  • Tuesday - Live session with Coaches
  • Wednesday - Workout Wednesday with 3 sessions: Footwork, Stickwork and Circuit
  • Thursday - Live session with Coaches
  • Friday - Goalie session & Parent Forum

Many players participate in 5 sessions a week, most do at least 3.

STRUCTURE & SCHEDULE

Zoom calls have replaced fields. This video shows you how our coaches and players interact with each other on our new "fields". And it shows that a lot of meaningful work can be done in a virtual program. Also, if you take a look at the captions in the lower left, you can get a feel for the structure of the schedule.

DIVERSE LEARNING

A quick word about our CURRICULUM. Our Individual Training assignments focus on building overall body strength. Footwork and Stickwork are both lacrosse specific. Everything is designed to work indoors, in a small space. The Live sessions reinforce the Individual Training, but we also spend a considerable amount of time working on mindset development, lacrosse IQ, as well as the roots and meaning for the game. We assign homework after every session and we do a lot of in-class participation such as “wear your favorite shirt” day, or “tell us about someone that inspires you.” We will also start to add outdoor classes for players with more space at their disposal to work on shooting and dodging exercises. We end the week with a call just for parents to talk through any questions regarding Virtual Training.

On our Zoom calls we work with players on both mental and physical aspects of being an athlete. In this video you can see a collection of vision boards made by girls and discussed in a live session, as well as shooting videos that were sent in to us as part of a homework assignment.

THE BACK END

Dragons Virtual Training has a fully integrated back end. We use TeamSnap for:

  • Rosters
  • Schedules
  • Messaging
  • File uploads (reference videos, training assignments, drill descriptions)
  • Statistics

When you participate in Dragons Virtual Training it feels like a normal season. You are on a roster and can see your teammates. You get to know your coaches. Every event is scheduled and you receive notifications and reminders prior to each event. The Zoom call link for each event is embedded in the schedule notification so you can click right through. No searching for the e-mail with the link at the last second. Players can always access reference documentation in the Media folders of TeamSnap. If we e-mailed it, you can be pretty sure that it is in a Media folder.

STATISTICS

An important feature to point out is STATISTICS. We try to hold our players accountable for their Individual Training. To that end we have set up the TeamSnap Statistics feature to allow players to record weekly numbers for wall ball, running, jump rope, footwork, stickwork, circuits and more. At the end of the week we publish the team and individual top 3 statistics. This video shows a few of our players completing their Individual Training.

 

CONNECTION & COMMUNITY

Although we are not able to see each other on the field as we are used to, the level of communication between teammates has gone up dramatically. Last week a group of middle school players organized a birthday celebration for a fellow player all on their own, without interaction from parents. Virtual Training provided the consistent interaction and structure necessary for players to create their own "project groups" and to get things done on their own.

DRILL LIBRARY

One more important thing to point out is that we have our own DRILL LIBRARY that players can reference as part of their training. We already have close to 50 videos up and add more material continuously.

Dragons Virtual Training is now open to all boys & girls in K-8 at an all-inclusive cost of $45 per week.

JUST ADDED: BOYS HS VIRTUAL TRAINING

Nobody really thought that we would spend the Spring launching Dragons Virtual Training, but here we are. And to be honest, we have become quite good at this new form of training. Mostly because the core value of Virtual Training is the same as on-field training: we are providing the coach-player relationship, the team experience, as well as a reliable routine that gives players something to look forward to.

Our High School program is different from our youth program in that it has a 5-day a week structure and is intended as a framework to support players on their individual paths.

THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE

  1. Motivation Monday - Sets up the week with a motivational talk and working session via Zoom. Individual raining plans are also discussed a this session. 
  2. Tuesday Recruiting Check-In - We talk to players in a small group setting to see whom they are e-mailing, what the status of their reel is, what questions they have. The goal is to make sure all players are doing SOMETHING and they are getting the advice they need.
  3. Workout Wednesday - HS players join the existing Dragons weekly workout routine that consists of footwork (3pm), bodyweight circuit (4pm) and stick work (5pm).
  4. Thursday & Friday is open for workshops and guest speakers. The specific schedule will vary weekly. Guest speakers will be professional athletes or college coaches. Workshops can be any number of things: Time management, video editing, how to write a letter, etc.

REGISTRATION & QUESTIONS

Erik Krum - Athletic Director

Born and raised in Denver Colorado, Erik  moved to Manhattan Beach, CA in 2004 and graduated from Mira Costa High School where he was 2x All-American (2006 & 2007). Erik's next stop was Salisbury University from 2007-2012, where he won 3 national championships. As a senior, Erik was a First Team All-American, as well as the regular season highest goal scorer. In 2014 & 2015 Erik played for the Ohio Machine in the MLL. Since 2013 Krum has been athletic director for the Santa Monica Dragons. As such, Erik determines the annual curriculum, content of all programs and sets the tone for the behavior, attitude and work ethic on the field. Krum is one of the best motivators in the sport on the West Coast and is extremely close with his players. He is also lacrosse program head and head varsity coach at harvard Westlake.

Meghan Toomey - Program Director

Meghan has been at the head of Dragons Lacrosse since the inception of the girls program in 2014, growing the program from an 8 person roster to a full rosters of teams and several championships. Her vision and dedication for creating a unique club experience largely contributed to the rapid growth of the program. A native of Annapolis, Maryland, Meghan was an All-American defender and captain at Salisbury University leading the program to two head varsity coach at Marlborough High School, and has previously coached the Los Angeles WDNT team and Under Armour Underclassman team. Meghan will be coaching all age levels and is the Program Director for Fire Santa Monica, as well as the overall Fire Lacrosse Program Director.

New Players

We strive to make playing lacrosse as simple and affordable as possible. We hold free clinics throughout the year, offer new players a free trial session and provide free loaner gear. We even have a LaunchPad program that provides guidelines on how to get into lacrosse and at what time of the year.

Advanced Players

Over the last 6 years we have developed hundreds of boys into tournament level players and won close to 50 championships. Our high school boys compete at the highest level on the West Coast and are active in the recruiting process. The Dragons girls program serves as a development program and advanced players participate in Fire Lacrosse during tournament season.

The Annual Calendar

Dragons offers programming for boys and girls in K through 12 from September to the end of July. Fall is the best time of year to get started. In there winter we offer recreational and tournament teams, as well as high school recruiting for boys. In the spring we focus on participation in youth rec leagues. In the summer we are back to doing tournaments and traveling across the West and East Coast for recruiting events.

Player Development

We take a long-term approach to developing boys and girls into the best possible and well-rounded student athletes they can be; on and off the field. Our coaching staff is the most expansive and knowledgable in the area and our 360º Player Development curriculum provides the structure for a path from elementary school to through high school.

Events

We like to bring the lacrosse community together several times a year to just have fun or be part of a good cause. Every Halloween we host the Pumpkin Shoot on the beach in Santa Monica and we have several videos to show for it. Every June we host the Laps 4 Lax Fundraiser to bring everyone together for a fun and meaningful pre-summer event.
